Mastodon is an emerging microblogging service similar to Twitter, only a lot more open and a lot more benevolent. It’s one of several new social media services that are federated (aka connected) to each other via ActivityPub, an open protocol adopted by the W3C, the standards body for the World Wide Web. Collectively, these services form a new part of the World Wide Web called the Fediverse.
